SoulUp, a Bengaluru-based startup, is reimagining mental health support by creating a digital platform often likened to a “LinkedIn-like network for mental health.” Founded by Punita Mittal and Mahak Maheshwari, SoulUp aims to foster open conversations and peer connections in the realm of mental well-being. The startup gained traction after securing an investment of ₹50 lakh from Namita Thapar, executive director of Emcure Pharmaceuticals, during its appearance on Shark Tank India.
Founders’ Vision
Mittal and Maheshwari, both alumni of prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), share a common goal of making a meaningful impact in the health-tech space. Drawing from their extensive experience in healthcare and technology, they conceptualized SoulUp as a platform to facilitate genuine peer interactions and support for individuals navigating emotional challenges.
Core Features and Offerings
Launched in February 2022, SoulUp offers various features designed to foster supportive connections:
1-on-1 Connect: Users can engage in private video conversations with verified peers who have undergone rigorous training and share similar experiences. These conversations focus on diverse topics, including relationships, career, and mental health concerns, priced at ₹199-399 for a 45-minute session.
Group Conversations: SoulUp hosts topic-based group sessions led by experts, allowing users to participate in guided discussions in small cohorts. These sessions aim to provide a supportive environment for shared learning and growth, with prices starting from ₹2,500 for a series of sessions.
StirUps: Designed as long-term support groups resembling group therapy, StirUps offer continuous engagement over 6 months to a year. Members benefit from ongoing peer support and community connections, with a membership fee of ₹1,000 per month.
Addressing Challenges
Operating a peer-led network presents unique challenges, including privacy concerns and potential risks associated with peer influence. To mitigate these challenges, SoulUp implements stringent verification processes, comprehensive training for peers, and feedback mechanisms to ensure the effectiveness and safety of interactions.
Impact and Growth
Since its inception, SoulUp has facilitated over 1,200 conversations and boasts a network of over 300 peers, reaching a diverse user base across India and overseas. Following its appearance on Shark Tank India, the startup experienced a significant surge in traffic and revenue, reflecting growing interest and recognition of its innovative approach to mental health support.
The Shark Tank Journey
Participating in Shark Tank India provided SoulUp with a platform to showcase its vision and secure vital funding for expansion. While navigating the rigorous selection process posed challenges, the founders ultimately found success in striking a deal with investor Namita Thapar, further propelling SoulUp’s journey towards transforming mental health support in India and beyond.
