Seeking a New Adventure
Originally from Limerick, Ireland, my husband and I spent the majority of our lives in the US. After 35 years, we decided it was time to explore Europe and settled on Valencia, Spain, as our destination. We were drawn to its warm climate and coastal setting, opting for a change of scenery from the hilly terrain of Lisbon.
Affordable Property Market
Valencia offered us an affordable housing market, unlike the competitive landscape we experienced in Oakland. In 2023, we purchased two properties in Valencia for a total of less than $370,000, paying all cash. This was a stark contrast to our experience in the US, where we faced bidding wars and high mortgage payments.
Simplified Homebuying Process
Buying property in Spain was surprisingly straightforward compared to the US. Within a week of visiting Valencia in June 2022, we found a condo we loved. With the help of a trusted lawyer and power of attorney, we navigated the process seamlessly from overseas, completing the purchase within a month.
Embracing the Spanish Lifestyle
Our first property was a cozy condo in a central location, while the second was a stunning loft-style condo that stole our hearts. Embracing the Spanish lifestyle, we found joy in the city’s vibrant atmosphere, diverse community, and culinary delights. Despite missing aspects of life in California, Valencia offered us a lower cost of living, safety, and urban convenience.
Navigating Challenges
While our transition to Valencia was relatively smooth, we encountered challenges typical of buying property in a foreign country. Murky regulations and potential scams required diligence and guidance from reputable sources. However, our love for Valencia outweighed these hurdles, and we found solace in contributing to the local community.
Embracing the New Chapter
Valencia has become our home away from home, offering us the perfect blend of adventure and comfort. As we settle into our new life, we cherish the vibrant culture, picturesque scenery, and newfound sense of belonging. While our journey from California to Spain had its complexities, the rewards have been immeasurable, making every step worthwhile.
