As someone who has served as a flight attendant for nearly a decade, I’ve encountered my fair share of misconceptions about this profession. Additionally, with the field seeing an influx of new members and the employment of flight attendants projected to increase in the coming years, there are several aspects I believe travelers should be aware of before their next flight. Whether you’re considering a career in aviation or simply want to be a more empathetic passenger, here are four things I wish people knew about being a flight attendant:

Reserve Duty Requires Flexibility

Flexibility is paramount for flight attendants, especially those just starting out in the industry. Many new recruits are placed on reserve duty, meaning they’re only assigned flights when additional coverage is necessary. This could entail being called in with as little as two hours’ notice to replace a colleague who is sick or unable to make it to the airport on time. So, if you happen to see a flight attendant rushing to the gate, they may very well be on reserve duty.

Safety Is Our Top Priority

While serving beverages and attending to passenger needs are integral parts of our job, safety always takes precedence. Flight attendants undergo rigorous training to ensure they can effectively respond to various in-flight emergencies. From handling turbulence to administering CPR, we are equipped with the skills needed to maintain a secure cabin environment. Providing excellent customer service is important, but nothing supersedes the safety of our passengers.

Manners Matter

A simple “please” or “thank you” can go a long way in brightening a flight attendant’s day. Despite the hustle and bustle of air travel, polite and courteous passengers make our job much more enjoyable. Unfortunately, not all passengers extend basic courtesies, so when we encounter individuals who do, it truly makes a difference.

Delays Are Frustrating for Everyone

Contrary to popular belief, flight attendants share passengers’ frustrations when it comes to flight delays. We, too, want to reach our destination as swiftly as possible. Additionally, it’s important to note that flight attendants are typically only compensated for the duration of the flight itself, rather than the time spent preparing for boarding or waiting between flights. Consequently, delays can impact our pay and overall work schedule, making punctuality a priority for both passengers and crew members alike.

By understanding these key insights, travelers can cultivate a greater appreciation for the work flight attendants do and strive to make their journey as pleasant and smooth as possible.
