The Ocean Grove Surf Life Saving Club, designed by Wood Marsh, draws inspiration from Victoria’s rugged sandstone coastline, integrating key contextual influences into its form and materiality. Evoking the weathered appearance of the coastline, the club embodies a sense of robustness and resilience, characterized by its ‘dune’ and ‘stack’ components.
Harmonizing with the Landscape
Positioned thoughtfully within the landscape and respecting the footprint of the original building, the club’s expansion spans two levels. The lower level, nestled into the site’s slope, houses essential functions such as patrol rooms, first aid facilities, change rooms, and surf lifesaving equipment storage. Acting as a podium, it provides a solid foundation while offering direct beach access.
Seamlessly Integrated Design
The upper level, following the natural contours of the terrain, hosts social spaces like a café and bar, offering sweeping views of the Bass Strait. Elevated for enhanced accessibility, the building’s design creates the illusion of a single-storey structure from most perspectives, blending seamlessly with its surroundings.
Coastal Beacon: The Control Tower
The distinct control tower, resembling a protruding rock formation, serves as a lookout point for beach patrols and provides shelter for volunteers. Its strategic placement ensures optimal visibility while functioning as a coastal landmark. Constructed with natural timber, dark metal, concrete, and glass, the tower stands as a symbol of resilience against the elements.
Reflecting Oceanic Elements
The design incorporates deliberate curves and softened edges, echoing the ocean’s influence and eroded dunes. By replacing the previous structure, the club underwent significant rebuilding, reimagining its role as a community gathering space. Internally, flexible configurations cater to various functions, fostering a sense of inclusivity and community engagement.
