The Community Center Camburi stands as a testament to community-driven development, serving the local low-income community of Camburi as a vital social development project. Initiated in 2004 and still active in 2018, the project has evolved over the years under the stewardship of the local community members, operating as a cooperative and local association.
Collaborative Decision-Making
Led by CRU! Architects through the Bamboostic-project, the community was empowered to make decisions regarding the content and program of the building. From the initial community center to subsequent additions like a computer room, library, pre-school, and cooperative building, each component was determined by the needs and aspirations of the community.
Hands-Off Approach
CRU! Architects maintained a hands-off approach to decision-making, providing technical assistance and financial support while respecting the autonomy of the cooperative and association. The project served as an educational opportunity, empowering the community to enhance their skills in building community infrastructure.
Design Principles
The design of the Community Center Camburi was guided by three main requirements outlined by the local association of Cambury:
Communal Space
The facility was designed to provide a communal space for meetings, school activities, and events, along with separate rooms for classes and material storage. This flexible layout accommodates various community needs and activities.
Geographical Center
By forming a perceived geographical center of the town, the building fosters a sense of identity and community pride. Its strategic location serves as a hub for social interaction and collective gatherings.
Integration with Landscape
To integrate harmoniously with the surrounding landscape and the existing school, the design of the center was carefully considered. Situated 50 meters inland from the beach, the building is oriented to capture the main wind for ventilation while blending seamlessly with its natural surroundings.
Environmental Considerations
Environmental factors played a crucial role in the design of the Community Center Camburi, with a focus on natural ventilation and wind resistance.
Optimal Ventilation
The building’s orientation towards the sea and its elevated roof facilitate optimal natural ventilation. Open lateral sides allow for airflow, creating a comfortable indoor environment under warm and humid conditions.
Wind-Bracing Design
Given the impact of wind force on tall structures, the building’s design incorporated effective wind-bracing through careful triangulation and cross-bracing of lateral trusses. This structural approach ensures stability and resilience, particularly during storms.
In summary, the Community Center Camburi exemplifies a participatory approach to community development, where local empowerment, sustainable design, and environmental considerations converge to create a vibrant and resilient social infrastructure.
